I haven’t read that speech since high school. Good stuff. I wish Obama would man up and call it like this:

Recognition of the falsity of material wealth as the standard of success goes hand in hand with the abandonment of the false belief that public office and high political position are to be valued only by the standards of pride of place and personal profit; and there must be an end to a conduct in banking and in business which too often has given to a sacred trust the likeness of callous and selfish wrongdoing.

Hi, Ryk,

Glad you liked the Poisonwood Bible. Have you read any David Korten?

First I read his latest book, “The Great Turning” and so then I went to his previous book “When Corporations Rule The World”, written in 1993, but sadly, still very contemporary.

He pointed out, as you point out, as others have pointed out, that infinite growth on a finite planet is impossible.

And it’s insane to promote it.

Yet, every politician, from Obama on down, repeats the mantra “We need growth”.

And even weirder, after the breakdown of the financial system “We need to get borrowing again, so we can grow”.

This is what happens after years of Fox News. People are so confused and stupid that absurdities must be spouted by all.

FDR gave a great inaugural speech, which is, of course, only remembered for one line, since that’s the attention span of the average American nowadays.

Check it out, especially when he ridicules the banks for wanting to be bailed out, so that they can lend some more!

I probably couldn’t make it through a book like that. Hell, I couldn’t even finish Mark Durfee’s “Stink: Prose and poetry of Detroit,” for feeling so drained from it.
Just from your description of Akpan’s book, I’m sitting here feeling downright wealthy because I have a roof over my head.

It seems like one major function of organization – any degree or type of organization – is survival of the organization itself, even if it’s past its “use by” date. That’s why I’m a closet anarchist.

And no, I don’t know what I’m talking about. This is just what occurred to me while I was reading your piece.
